In the Simple Things

Posted by

Do you see God?
I see God every day, but I have to look.

I see God in the grandeur of our world, in the mighty and magnificent creations,
But I also see God more often in the simple things, small and seemingly insignificant.
In the day to day sights, sounds and interesting people.
In the clear blue sky and sparkling sun he speaks with clarity to me.
He says ‘here, enjoy this day of warmth, and I will walk with you.’

I see the fingerprint of God himself in the smell of freshly mown grass,
Scented roses, the evening scent of the olive grove and home cooking.
God speaks to my senses, with joy and satisfaction
He says ‘enjoy this cooking, this bunch of flowers – I made it exquisitely for you’.

I see God in exquisite flowers.
My kowhai tree bows her branches full of flowers, stunningly yellow bright!
Each flower intricately and purposefully made, relationships with bees are formed, and with the annual promise of miracle seed pods in autumn.
God painted flowers with his love and creativity, all so different, beautiful and stunning.
Velvety petals, delicate stamens, wondrous nectar, I see his hand.
He speaks to me and says ‘this flower is but a simple example of how complex and wondrous you are.  I made you.  I love you just like I love this floral creation of mine.’

I see God in the animals that I look after, the joy givers in my life.
My cats, and the affection they show (at their discretion).
When they curl up in a tight ball or stretch out long in the inviting sun.
The miracle of their purr alone speaks to me of a very clever and creative God.
My chickens…give me eggs…most days,
God has blessed them with enduring life cycles –  he determines their timing,
He gives voice to their crow, and beauty to their feathers,
And I am blown away.
It speaks of an amazing creative God, who put systems in place, lifecycles into action.  God says ‘ see these wondrous animals and birds?  I made them perfect for where they live, they do not go without, and like you, they are my pride and joy.’

I see God in the rain that breaks a relentless drought.
The rain that gives quenching drink to a parched ground.
The sound of rain on the roof, when you are warm in bed.
God says ‘ Just like that rain on the thirsty ground, I can give you water, that will make you grow and flourish, water that will satisfy the very core of your soul.’
The torrents of rain through a gorge, and the power of water running through a river in flood…I see a God.  God, who is gentle like mist, yet powerful and angry about sin, like a river in flood.  He says ‘ come to me, and you will never thirst, I have a solution to this sin problem, but you must drink from me’.

I see God in the clouds that decorate our sky.
In the towering thunder clouds that finally release their buckets of rain, and rumble to make their presence known.
The patterns of clouds that form after a mountain range,
Beautiful sunsets where God flicks his paintbrush over the sky and transforms it into an ever changing theatre of colour.
He says to me, ‘Here, I thought you needed a special end to your day, this colour is for you to enjoy.  No other reason. Let me sit with you while you admire it.”

I see God in my sleeping, slumbering children.
Their eyes closed in rest, their bodies still from action, beautiful and relaxed.
I think about God who knew them in my womb.
Who had magnificent plans for them before they were conceived.
A God who knitted them together, grew them, nourished them, brought them forth at their birth.
A God who saw their first fall, first call, first pain, and first mistake, and who helped them up again.
A God who so desperately and insistently wants them to succeed, to be happy and know HIM as their friend.
A God who watches over them.
I am blessed as I watch.
While I watch them sleep, He says to me ‘Feel that love in your soul for your children?  That is like a drop of rain in the ocean for the love I feel for you’.

Thankyou God for showing yourself every day in the small things, and in the grand things.
Help me to see you, to know you, understand you, to feel you and hear you.
In those difficult valley times, when my sight is dim, help me to remember you.
Help me to simply stop in this world of being ever busy.
Help me to remember the beauty of your Sabbath rest that gives us permission to stop on this life treadmill.
Help me to stop, to breathe in the air of your Spirit, to feel the warmth of your presence.
Fill my wandering mind, fill my empty soul with the scent of your sweet Spirit, that I may see You with different eyes.  To recognise your fingerprint in my life, in my world, in Your world.
Surround me with your presence, your presence that brings healing, restoration, conviction and peace.
Thankyou my God, my artistic, creative, loving, sacrificing God.
